SL 7 loses 1st game. How do you keep desperation away?

SL 7 playing SL 7 1st SL 7 has 4 wins, 2nd SL 7 has 0 wins. How do you keep desperation away?

When you are down by several games, how do you keep desperation from overwhelming you and come back a win? Can that be described?

My two cents. When in this situation, you can only go with what you know. You do not know whether you will win or not, but you do know if you have overcome this situation before. If you have been in this position before and won, remind yourself of that, use that to draw from, remind yourself of that time you won a match that you were down big and hopefully you will beat desperation. Focus on that positive match and not the current situation.
If you are setting in the chair watching your opponent run racks, mentally become him, playing his game in your mind, that way when you come to the table, you are still in synch or a mental type of rythmn, where hopefully you just fall right into stroke, without thinking of what the score is. Think of how beautiful a perfectly executed run out is, as your opponent is completing one. I think it is all a battle to overcome desperation or negative thinking.

As far as a desperation shot, it is no different than a low percentage shot. Just that, nothing more than a tougher than usual shot. They happen.

If you do lose, do not beat yourself up, its only pool. Think about what you could have done differently and try to remember that lesson, the next time you are setting in the chair watching as your opponent kicks your butt. Regardless, just like the other said, it is all done one shot at a time.

On a different note, I always loved steam rolling a guy as he was throwing his cue around, ranting and raving in desperation. Some people would say this is a form of sharking by the losing player, I always felt it was a motivator. For some reason it always makes me play better. One more reason not to let your desperation show. If a player can learn to play position with center ball first and then start to learn english it is better.

Players start using english too much, to the point where they rely on it to make shots. I've heard players say "I shoot this cut shot with outside english to make it" but they don't know why(contact induced throw causes the shot to be under cut). If you learn to shoot center ball first on all shots at all different speeds then you move up to english.

Speed is also a direct result of your stroke. I see too many players waste their time doing practice strokes because they always change the speed on the final stroke (they have the same speed everytime on teh practice stroke and speed up or slow down on the final stroke). Another key component is bridge length and follow through. If its a short little shot if you shorten your bridge and follow through its easier to control the ball and vice versa - on a hard shot (the break) you lengthen the bridge distance and follow through.

It's when we start playing out of our natural tempo and begin to hurry that we neglect to see what's on the table. Often we are so pleased with an opponent's miss and eager to shoot that we simply fire in the shot in front of us only to face an impossible situation afterwards. In a game situation it is imperative when arriving at the table to take the time needed to assess the entire layout. Where are the problem balls? Can I run out? If not do I play a safety now or do I run a few balls and use that perfectly situated five ball for a devastating safety several shots from now? What is possible

Check out the whole article and see if it helps you

WAlly
