There are 2 replies, with the last one on 07/29/2010 at 11:57:29 AM by dantexn
Quote:
This player (sl 5) claims his biggest problem is speed and how he almost always overshoots position or comes up short. It was then that I started to go over how you should be shooting 80% + of your shots with approximately the same speed and stroke (Monks 2-7-2 speed). I proceeded to show him that even with that speed of a shot and as long as you have an angle then you can get the cue ball to travel to almost anywhere on the table. Then when going over a couple basic position play shots I showed him the different results you get when you shoot the same exact shot at the same speed but with a different stroke (Punch, Follow, Draw, or Spin). Before going over this with him he was trying to play position going either 2 rails and having to avoid the side pocket or by spinning the ball off the rail slightly. After going over the Punch stroke he was able to get position without english and he could do this consistantly.

I agree with ebranen, that this player who already shoots good, with a little grasp of the concepts and a slight improvement in position play, he will move up to a 6. After he gets a little more comfortable with the different strokes and learns the natural roll of the balls and how to manipulate this slightly (not to over do it), he will end up a 7.

So a recap of Position play and progression through learning
It all starts with fundamentals (approach, allignment, stance, bridge, grip, stroke)
Then aiming and how to pocket balls,
then tangent line and the natural path of the cue ball,
then learning effects of slight draw/follow and english,
then pattern play of the best ways to control the cue ball (playing to the right side of the ball, playing the right path so your target area is larger),
Doing all of the above and pocketing balls cleanly while getting position,
More advanced would be reading/mapping the table better, recognizing key balls, break out balls, and when to play safe

Key things to avoid:
Getting sloppy (rattling most of your shots means you need to learn why its rattling and to adjust to pocket cleanly)
Fundamental errors - these are the most common yet easiest to recognize and fix (you know what i mean, that immediately after you do it you know what you did wrong)
Too much english - only use as much as you need and not more
Too complicated of position - keep it short and simple (the less the cue ball travels the more predictable the position - Stop shot being the most valuable)

There are 8 replies, with the last one on 07/26/2010 at 6:40:12 PM by dantexn
Quote:
I don't think people should be as focused on how your opponent plays (you have no control over that), but your pool experience should be based on how you play.

I lost a few weeks ago pretty bad (15-5 I believe) but I shot good and felt good about how I played. Late last session I was shooting great and was up 3-0 in a race to 5, game 4 I didn't make anything on the break and he ran out, he proceeded to run 2 racks in a row and then drop the 8 on the break to win 4 in a row, the final game I only got one shot (which was kicking out of a good safe he played on me). I lost that match 5-3 in 3 or 4 innings with a safety in there. I have no control over how well (or poor) my opponent plays.

My point is that although we all want to win, it goes beyond that. This is a great game that my goal is to play well. I also enjoy the competition, the team aspect, the friends and fun of the APA. But it all boils down to my striving to play this game well. Learn something every time you play...

Last night (a non-league night for me) I still went to the poolhall to get some practice in. After a little practice a friend came up and asked if I wanted to play some Bank pool. Now I was intending to just practice but I am a sucker for a game of bank pool. A few racks of bank pool and then I decided to change the game. We played some made up version of Billiards (3-cushion) even though we were on a regular table. We had some fun with that and the creativity of the game.

Yes this post is going somewhere. I think it is important for players to play all the different games every once in a while to see a different perspective of this great game. Bank pool, one pocket, straight pool, billiards, snooker, reverse pool... These different views and skillsets will help you bring more to your normal game. This will even help you improve in ways you might not have come across just playing 8-ball and 9-ball.

Did anyone else see the Clinic that Shane Van Boening put on at the Gem City Classic this past weekend? He was a machine! I saw multiple matches where it was as if he played perfect. Just missing a couple shots in each match and his safety play was spot on. To set things even more in his favor was how strong his breaking was all weekend.

This was the best pool playing I've ever seen.

Some other notable comments I have are that Corey Deuel and Charlie Williams jump shots were just beautiful. Not only jumping to make the shot but to play position also! Corey jump a ball that was inches away, made a slight cut shot down table and drew the ball back a few feet - beautiful.
