hope you guys can answer a few questions. what is the skill level cut off? in other words i am only a 5 can i play? i know it's definately 6 and above but was wondering if that's a rule. any one know when they play at cues II? not interested in playing on 8 ft tables - anywhere, with anyone, sorry to my friends who play at places like mazzy's. i like my friends (you know i love you all) but i am looking to play on the big boy tables only. i know they run masters on sundays at cues but i thought they also did it on wednesday. does anyone know when the session we are in ends and the new one starts? i know i can ask fred ruttinger on sundays but i will not be there this week and thought maybe i'd get lucky here. thanks in advance.

Hi Jason! Of course you can "hang with the big boys"! The Masters Division is alive and well at Mr. Cues on Sunday. They start playing at 1:00 PM.( place opens at 12:00 Noon), and yes, they play on the 9-ft. tables. I'm not positive what week they're in, or when the next session starts, but I will find out for you. Info. is probably posted on this website too, under "Schedules". Just a thought... will let you know soon!

On second thought, you might want to look up under "Calendars/Leagues" too. See ya!

Jason, there is no s/l cutoff, but speaking from past experience, you really don't want to be under a level 6 (real skill, not just rated) or you won't enjoy it very much.

I disagree with Dranke's comment. I am a five both in ranking and ability. I played in the Master's League a few sessions ago. I did not win a lot, but I had a good time. I found a few times that the other player had just as much pressure to win as I felt when they found out I was a five. I mean it would be kind of embarrassing to lose to a five in a straight up match when you are an eight or nine. I personally know a few of the guys in that league. They might not say it out loud, but I know they are thinking about how embarrassed they would be to lose to a five. The only reason I stopped playing in the Master's League is because my team fell apart. I got to see some good pool and I learned a thing or two about pool, my game, and myself. As for as my game, my eight ball game has really come around. I went 4-0 during the qualifier cup winning 4-1, 4-0, 4-1, and 4-1. One of those wins was against a 'strong' six. The pressure of the qualifier cup was nothing compared to the pressure of playing someone you know you cannot make mistakes against. If you are seriously trying to get better, this is the next step for you.

i am not worried about the level of competition. i play on tuesday's at the pool room (in another league not to be named out of respect)in a division that boasts, andy stewart, clay fisher, jeff hooks, chris mcdonald, robert south, betty sessions, bob lea, randy morris, rusty boudoin, jay wright, kristen malone, steve lomax, jim tramel, mo brown, curtis hale, just to name a few. i don't have the winning percentage i do against people my own skill and below in regular apa play, but i hold my own and it's making me better and that's what i am looking for. no offense but i doubt you're going to throw any masters division at me that's tougher than what i already face. i am also starting to sour on regular league play. i have had my fill and want something else. i have never liked the apa scoring format for 9 ball. i understand why it is needed - i think it makes the game accessible for everyone to compete and that's a good thing, but it's not what i like. i do however like the us amateur format. the pool room in duluth is going to be closing - they told us tonight, i will detail in another post - so i am looking to keep playing (especially 9 ball) on 9ft tables. since moving to atlanta in 07 the pool room has been my home away from home and cues has been like my second or vacation home. that's why i am looking to join there. thanks for the info guys, i knew you would step up and help out!

I don't know how your other league plays out and how often you play against those names you dropped, but in this league you will be playing against Strong 7's or above the majority of the time. The format is better than normal APA and quicker (most teams split tables right off the bat and you get done pretty quick).

Theres a couple teams that are just here to play but most of the teams are very competitive and striving to learn and grow as pool players. I recommend this to anyone wanting steady competition and to learn as they go.

Brad, it's a different kind of pressure I think. Trust me when I tell you playing for the Championship at Qualifier is a whole lot more intense than playing someone in Masters that I know will kick my butt if I make mistakes! Can only imagine what it feels like at the ultimate level, Vegas. If you won with those scores, and one was against a "strong six" you are lucky you didn't go up during Q-cup. Maybe you should be a six and playing in Masters.
I agree that is the next step up in improving your game. The problem isn't necessarily that you are a five. I think the issue is that a Masters team is made up of four members. If you have a five on your team, you are only as strong as the weakest link. If you have a five that loses 90% of the time, you really can't advance that team much, if in fact they are looking to take that team to the highest level, Vegas. If it's just for fun and improving your game, another story.

hey there dan,
i get my ass handed to me on regular basis by those guys i mentioned (and like i said a few more). the other is league is play for cash basically so they are out for blood all out, all the time. like i said i am not woried about that part. i expect to struggle to hold my own but that is a big part of why i've gotten alot better over the last year and i feel masters league would be the same sort of fit for me. anyone at cues who accept me on a team already knows how i shoot because i play there already on sundays in 8 and 9 ball leagues. so they would know the risk vs. reward of adding me. i do appreciate your input and thank you for the info. hopefully i'll see you around some time and we can play a bit. i don't think i have had the pleasure of meeting you yet. if i have and don't remember or recognize your name i'm sorry. i'll be at the all star cups this weekend maybe see you there.

If you guys happen to need another player when you get closer to the new session I'll play. I'm not the strongest player in the Wed masters but I'm not the weakest either. I'm a decent 7 that on most days can hold his own against probably all but the top 5% of the masters league.

Just keep me in mind if you are short players - i could fill the spot until you found a better player lol

O.K. dantexan, Chris and Jason...I'll tell Fred that we have a new team on Sundays! Y'all add up to 3 players, that's all you need. (We'll find another for you in case someone is sick or "out or something". Jason, DO NOT let these posts intimidate you...I see the people who shoot on the masters on Sundays...YOU can hang! Regular league or not, you are one of the stronger players I've seen! Especially with your motivation...there's no stopping you! Y'all better grab him now folks, 'cause he's gonna' be a hot commodity!
